[VISITING ARTIST] In The Beginning (2018, pencil on paper)

London artist Ben King’s longstanding interest in the ephemeral is captured here in the light application of line and colour, reminiscent of reflected light through stained glass: visible yet intangible, present yet fleeting, poetic and lyrical yet without substance. By restricting his use of colour to the three primaries he imbues his drawing with refreshing simplicity and visual purity, free from chromatic complexity and contamination.

King executed this work using his much loved ‘movement over matter’ technique, a unique practice in which, seated low so that the paper is positioned just above eye level, he focuses on the movement of his hand over the final composition, giving it the quality of a loose blind drawing. King’s technique enables greater fluidity and spontaneity in mark making, and explains why he is sometimes considered a performance artist.
